Barrels are a container item that appear in every Super Smash Bros. game. They are similar to Crates but have the ability to roll along inclines. When thrown onto the ground or another fighter, one to four items are released from the barrel. Like other container items, barrels may explode upon hitting the ground.

Starting with Super Smash Bros. Brawl, there are two other types of barrels — metallic and green present wrap — although they are no different in function. Barrels' design depends on the stage in which they appear; for instance, Present Barrels appear in the Yoshi's Island stage.

A trophy of all three types of barrels appears in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Super Smash Bros. for Wii U. In the latter game, the trophy can only be obtained in Trophy Rush mode.

Thrown Barrels may break on contact or go rolling along the ground to smash into characters. Like the Crate, the Barrel is heavy, so it will restrict the speed at which the character carrying it can move. This speed differs between characters.

When you throw a barrel, it won't shatter, but rather roll across the stage. When a rolling barrel hits a character, that character gets sent sailing. Barrels are heavy, so you'll need two hands to pick them up, and your foot speed will decrease too.

Hitting them lightly or throwing them might not be enough to get these things open. In fact, you might just end up sending them rolling, and just so you know, rolling barrels are a force to be reckoned with! They can send you flying off the stage!
