Ness's PK Fire in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U

PK Fire is a PSI attack appearing in every installment in the EarthBound series. It is also a special attack used by Ness and Lucas in the Super Smash Bros. series. In the original Super Smash Bros. it is Ness's standard special move, but since Super Smash Bros. Melee, PK Fire has become Ness's side special move, with PK Flash taking the place of being his standard special instead. PK Fire has been Lucas's side special since his debut as a playable fighter in Super Smash Bros. Brawl.

When either Ness or Lucas uses PK Fire, they throw a bolt of lightning from their fingertips. Ness's bolt of lightning travels at a downward arc while Lucas's travels directly forward, although it pushes him back a set distance. In addition, when Ness uses PK Fire in the air, the bolt travels at a greater downward arc than on the ground. The attacks upon hitting something are also different; Ness's creates a pillar of fire that deals continuous damage until it disappears, while Lucas's bursts into a fire that hits once.

In Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U, Ness is given two custom variants for this move. The first is PK Bonfire, which fires a bolt of lightning that does not travel as far or as fast, with higher start-up and ending lag, but the fire it creates upon hitting lasts longer and has more upward knockback. The second is PK Fire Burst, which behaves similarly to Lucas's PK Fire; this move has more start-up lag than normal PK Fire.

Ness also uses PK Fire for his down throw, though in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U, the fire is absent.

Trivia

  • Neither Ness nor Lucas can use PK Fire in the EarthBound series. In Super Smash Bros. Melee, there is a trophy for Paula that suggests that she taught Ness both PK Fire and PK Thunder.
