Sandbag is a living punching bag in the Super Smash Bros. series. It is the target in Home-Run Contest in every Super Smash Bros. game since its debut in Super Smash Bros. Melee. In Super Smash Bros. Brawl and its follow-up, Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U, Sandbags also appear as items during matches.

History[edit]

Super Smash Bros. Melee[edit]

Sandbag in Home-Run Contest in Super Smash Bros. Melee

In the Home-Run Contest of Super Smash Bros. Melee, the objective is for the player's fighter to whack the Sandbag as far as possible with a provided Home-Run Bat. During the challenge, the player has ten seconds to damage to the Sandbag as much as possible before the timer runs out. The more damage that Sandbag takes, the farther it will travel upon being when hit. Immediately before the last second runs out, the player must use the Home-Run Bat to whack the Sandbag off the pedestal on which it rests. Even if the Sandbag takes no damage beforehand, it still flies several hundred feet.

Sandbag has a trophy that is unlocked if the Sandbag travels at least 984 feet (300 m) in Home-Run Contest. According to the trophy's description, Sandbag does not feel hurt if hit by a Home-Run Bat.

Although Sandbag is not normally playable, it can be used by activating Debug Mode via a cheating device. Playing as Sandbag often freezes the game due to his lack of animations and inability to lose stock. If Kirby attempts to copy Sandbag, he does not receive any of its abilities.

Super Smash Bros. Brawl[edit]

Sandbag makes three appearances in Super Smash Bros. Brawl. In the Wi-Fi Connection mode, as players are waiting for the game to load, or other players to connect, they are able to attack Sandbag on the waiting screen. It also appeared in the Home-Run Contest once again. It also appears as a container, but can "lose" several items unlike other containers.

Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS[edit]

In Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS, a trophy of Sandbag can be obtained by reaching a combined total of 49212 ft. in Home-Run Contest using every fighters' high scores combined.

Super Smash Bros. for Wii U[edit]

In Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, a trophy of Sandbag can be acquired at random and has a different trophy description that the one in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate[edit]

Sandbag reappears as an item in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. In this game, it is animated, occasionally showing a happy expression. The Sandbag also appears as a Novice-class support spirit that takes up one support slot. Fighters equipped with this spirit will have increased defense after taking a large amount of damage during battles. The spirit can be obtained by clearing the Smash challenge in which the player has to reach 250% or more damage in a battle. Although the Home-Run Contest was originally missing from Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, as part of the September 5th, 2019 update that added Banjo and Kazooie as DLC, the Home-Run Contest made its return. Sandbag was updated to blush after being hit across the field.

Sandbag exists for one reason only: to get smashed in the Home-Run Contest. Pound on Sandbag as much as possible in the time allotted, then swing for the fences as you compete for the longest home run of all time. Getting hit doesn't hurt Sandbag at all. As a matter of fact, it loves to see players wind up and let loose.

An item that appears in the Home-Run Contest, where the goal is to do lots of damage to Sandbag, then send it flying as far as you can. It also appears in the regular game. If you smash it, a storm of confetti and items will burst out. Sandbag doesn't feel pain, though; in fact, it's happy to be of service.

1: Brawler Flag of USA.png This little guy makes a great sparring partner. No, really! In Home-Run Contest you'll send it flying, and in normal battles it has a habit of dropping items when you lay into it. Sandbag seems pretty content with being your punching bag, so it'd almost be mean not to go all out on it.
Flag of Europe.png This little guy is pretty good to practise with! In the Home-Run Contest, the goal is to attack Sandbag and then whack him as hard as you can to send him flying! He even appears in normal matches, where you can hit him to get lots of food and items. Don't worry, though - he loves to help out. It doesn't even hurt him at all!
