The Special Flag is a recurring item throughout several Namco games, originally from Rally X. In the Super Smash Bros. series, it is featured as an item in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.
Whenever a fighter uses a Special Flag, they hold it up in the air and become immobile. To use the Special Flag successfully, the fighter must hold it into the air for three seconds without taking any hits. In timed battles, doing this gives the user a KO in a timed battle, and in stock battles, it gives them a stock. When the fighter is hit while holding the Special Flag, they automatically drop it. Any neutral attack activates the holding animation, except a dash neutral.
Because of their function, Special Flags do not appear in Coin or Stamina Battles, regardless of item settings, nor do they appear in Smash Tour matches.
Both Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, feature a trophy of a Special Flag. In the former game, it is one of the randomly obtained trophies, and in the latter game, it is obtained by clearing all Solo Events.
