Lakitu & Spinies is the paired name for two characters from the Mario franchise, Lakitu and Spiny, both of whom primarily appear as enemies in Super Mario series.

Lakitus and Spinies are both Koopas, but have vastly different appearances: Lakitus have a dark green shell, wear a pair of goggles, and move around in a white cloud that has a smiling face. Spinies are quadrupedal Koopas who wear a red shell with large spikes for protection.

History[edit]

Super Smash Bros. Brawl[edit]

In Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Lakitu & Spinies have the same appearance and actions as in Super Mario Bros., which is the first game they appear in. When released, Lakitu moves around in the sky and throws Spiny Eggs down to the stage. When reaching the surface, the Spiny Eggs become Spinies, who slowly walk around the stage and damage any opponents who touch them. Lakitu is one of the few Assist Trophies who can be attacked, and can be defeated after a few hits. There is a trophy of Lakitu & Spinies paired, two stickers of Lakitu alone, and one sticker of Spiny alone.

Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U[edit]

In Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U, Lakitu & Spinies return as an Assist Trophy, and their role is retained from Super Smash Bros. Brawl. Both games share a trophy of Lakitu & Spinies.

In Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS's Smash Run mode, both Lakitus and Spinies appear as enemies, and their modern design is used over their Super Mario Bros. sprites. Although they act the same as their Assist Trophy counterpart, Lakitus and Spinies are not explicitly defined as a pair in Smash Run.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate[edit]

In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Lakitu and Spinies no longer appear as an Assist Trophy. Instead, they have a Spirit, which is known by their singular title, Lakitu & Spiny. The Spirit depicts the New Super Mario Bros. artwork for both characters.

A particularly stubborn breed of Koopa. Lakitus chase Mario aboard clouds and attack by throwing Spiny Eggs down from above. More recently, Lakitus have taken over the role of cameramen, filming with cameras that they dangle from long rods. Spinies are Koopa creatures with tough, spiked shells. Jumping onto them has no effect, but fireballs can dispatch them.
